7TH National Council on AIDS Held in Lagos

2025 NCA SUMMARY

The National Council on AIDS brought together government, Civil Society Organization and relevant stakeholders in the HIV response across the country in the Landmark Event Centre, Lagos with the crucial theme, “Advancing National HIV Sustainability Agenda in the Changing Global Policy Aid,” the council addressed the pressing need for Nigeria to take ownership of its HIV response in the face of shifting global aid policies.

Prevention of mother-child transmission of HIV/AIDS is possible

HIV medicines reduce the amount of HIV in the body. Having less HIV in the body reduces a woman’s risk of passing HIV to her child during pregnancy and childbirth. Having less HIV in the body also protects the woman’s health.

Some of the HIV medicine passes from the pregnant woman to her unborn baby across the placenta (also called the afterbirth). This transfer of HIV medicine protects the baby from HIV infection
